National charitable organization welcomes Fairfax County resident and innovation expert to improve access to adoption opportunities for parentless children

Chicago, IL – Gift of Adoption, a non-profit organization providing financial assistance to complete both domestic and international adoptions, is announcing the appointment of a new leader to its national board of directors. Chantilly, Virginia resident Sanjay Thirumalai is joining Gift of Adoption’s leadership team. Sanjay will lend his leadership expertise to help Gift of Adoption unite more children with families.

“Gift of Adoption helps unite children with forever families by providing the final financial support necessary to complete the adoption process,” says Pam Devereux, Gift of Adoption’s CEO. “We’re thrilled to welcome Sanjay to our national board. His experience and expertise will provide us with new insights into ways that we can unite in-need children with their forever homes.”

Today, there are more than 150 million orphans in the world with 415,000 children in the U.S. alone living without permanent families[1]. Gift of Adoption puts adoption in reach for more parentless children by providing the final funding necessary for adoptive families to welcome a child home. In his role on the board of directors, Sanjay will help Gift of Adoption expand its national reach and support the adoption needs of a greater number of children.

Sanjay currently serves as the Global Delivery Leader for Advisory and Innovation for Grant Thornton LLP. He lives in Fairfax County, Virginia with his wife and two children. Sanjay boasts more than two decades of leadership experience; throughout his career, he’s helped companies develop talent and scale up. Prior to moving to the Washington, D.C. region, Sanjay headed up Grant Thornton LLP’s Shared Services Center in India. Sanjay received a Bachelor’s of Engineering and a Master’s of Science from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science. He received a post-graduate diploma in management from the Indian Institute of Management at Bangalore. Sanjay’s passion for adoption began while serving on the board of a food bank in India that donated to local orphanages. There, he learned about the importance of a nurturing, family environment for in-need children.

Over the past 20 years, Gift of Adoption has awarded $8.8 million in adoption assistance grants to unite more than 3,026 children with families across the U.S. The organization prioritizes grants for those adopting the most vulnerable children facing what is likely their last or only chance at adoption. This includes families who are working to unite or keep siblings together and those adopting children with critical medical conditions, kids aging out of orphanages or children at risk of falling into the U.S. foster care system.
